The thing about designing a website is….

May 21, 2009

….it’s not “just a website”. You’re creating something that someone has to use, its got to provide something even if it is just clear basic information, they have to interact with it. You want the people who come to that site to take something way with them. Ultimately, what they think of the website is what they think of you. Capische??

Now, lets talk about the Re-branding Nigeria project. That I think it’s an absolute waste of time is besides the point. There is money behind it, the government is behind it. And now despite the “for Nigerians, by Nigerians” bandwagon, the British Government is apparently behind it too. Go figure.

This project launched at the beginning of the year. Today SolomonSydelle on Nigerian Curiosity published a post talking about the fact that there has been no website in all that time, no information about who is doing the re-branding, what the activities will be, the timeline… nothing. In response, an unknown blogger by the name of ‘test’ leaves a comment with the url of the website. I’m almost embarrased to put it here…it’s appalling. www.nigeriarebrands.com

These people are re-branding an ENTIRE nation and they can’t put together a simple website that communicates their aims. Instead it demonstrates the complete imbecillity (word?) of all of those involved.

Quoting Marshall McLuhanThe Medium is the Message“. Nigeria has just told the world its about 20 years behind. Thanks. Gotta love my peeps.

@DannyB Double posting makes up for double absences! lol! Seriously thinking on the open letter thing…if I can find time to write one!

@webround differences between the two sites are so stark!

Not even sure whether to blame Dora, could be the sycophantic reaction of those under her looking to line pockets. Who knows!

Who owns that hand next to Dora Akunyili? *sigh* Websites like this one piss me off. They kill the whole idea (even if it was a good one to start with). This is 2009 people. The world has gone virtual. I cannot even let my blog look so shabby – not to talk of the website of an entire nation. Tufia kwa!

My thoughts exactly. I would think they would be able to afford a very good graphic designer/web designer to create a better site. It looked to me like a poorly built wordpress blog.
If any rebranding is to take place, it should start on that website!
    Mediocrity is not allowed.

They need a new strategy i guess.
If something’s to be done-it ought to be done well.

@Vera they could have asked any Naija blogger and they would have done a way better job! I agree with you totally

@JJ mediocraty unfortunately appears to be the image the Nigerian govt wants to present! Go figure?!

@blogoratti I agree, except one wonders if they actually want to do something well, or just need new budgets for sticky fingers!

@LoloBloggs: even if it were due to sycophants trying to line their pockets, hasn’t Dora seen it? She should have immediately commented on it.

Looking on the good side, at least they have updates on what they’ve been up to (Articles + Updates)…although I didn’t read them…
